The Grotto of Lourdes in the Vatican Gardens is a hidden spiritual treasure within the walls of Vatican City. This faithful replica of the Lourdes Grotto in France was built as a retreat for prayer and contemplation, offering a peaceful sanctuary away from the bustling Vatican museums and St. Peter’s Square.
A Marian Devotion Brought to the Heart of the Vatican
The idea to create a miniature Lourdes grotto in the Vatican came from Monsignor Francis Xavier Schoepfer, Bishop of Tarbes, with the support of Pope Leo XIII. Thanks to donations from faithful Catholics worldwide, the grotto was completed and inaugurated on March 28, 1905, by Pope St. Pius X.
Since then, it has been a place of devotion where every pope has come to pray, meditate, and hold religious ceremonies. In particular, St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI frequently visited the site, reflecting their deep Marian devotion.
A Place of Prayer in Times of Crisis
One of the most significant moments in recent history took place in May 2020, when Pope Francis led the Holy Rosary at the Vatican Lourdes Grotto, praying for an end to the pandemic. This event united Catholics worldwide in prayer, highlighting the grotto’s role as a beacon of hope and faith.
Symbolism and Connection to the Original Lourdes Grotto
Under the statue of the Virgin Mary, a special plaque displays the words Mary spoke to St. Bernadette in 1858: "I am the Immaculate Conception." This message reaffirms the strong connection between the Vatican’s grotto and the original site in Lourdes, France, which continues to be one of the world’s most visited Marian pilgrimage sites.
How to Visit the Lourdes Grotto in the Vatican Gardens
While the Vatican Gardens are not open for casual visits, pilgrims and tourists can access them through guided tours organized by the Vatican.
